If you recently received a new passport and already hold an Australian visa, updating your passport details is something you should do as soon as possible. Many travellers forget this step, but it can create problems later during travel, visa checks, or future immigration applications.
Your Australian visa is electronically connected to your passport number. Once your passport changes, your visa records also needs updating with the Australian Department of Home Affairs.
At Global Consult, we regularly help visa holders and applicants update passport information correctly and avoid unnecessary immigration complications.
Why You Must Update Your Passport Details
Australian visas are stored digitally. Immigration systems use your passport number to identify your visa status and travel permissions. If your visa is still connected to an old or cancelled passport, you may experience:
- Delays at airports
- Airline boarding issues
- Problems accessing visa information
- Extra immigration checks
- Delays in future visa applications
A lot of people think their visa automatically transfers to the new passport. In most cases, that does not happen automatically.
Who Needs To Update Australian Visa Passport Details?
You should update your passport details if:
- Your passport expired and you got a new one
- Your passport was lost or stolen
- Your passport became damaged
- Your personal details changed
- You renewed your passport during a visa application process
This applies to many Australian visa categories, including:
- Student Visas
- Temporary Graduate Visas
- Skilled Migration Visas
- Partner Visas
- Employer Sponsored Visas
- Visitor Visas
- Permanent Residency applicants
Keeping your immigration records updated is very important whether you are inside Australia or overseas at the moment.
Important Notice For ETA 601 Visa Holders
If you hold an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) subclass 601 visa, your visa cannot be transferred to another passport.
You must apply for a completely new ETA using your new passport details. Many travellers only discover this at the airport, which can become very stressful and expensive sometimes.
How To Update Passport Details Through ImmiAccount
For most applicants and visa holders, updating passport details through ImmiAccount is the fastest option.
Steps To Update Your Passport Information Online
- Login to your ImmiAccount
- Open your visa application
- Select “View Details” or “Edit”
- Go to “Application Home”
- Click “Update Details”
- Select “Change of Passport Details”
- Choose the applicant name
- Enter the new passport details
- Add the reason for the passport change
- Submit the request
In many cases, the Department of Home Affairs updates the passport link within around 72 hours, although processing times can vary little depending on the application type.
When You Must Use The New Passport Details Web Form
Some applicants cannot use ImmiAccount to update their passport information. Instead, they must use the official New Passport Details Web Form from the Department of Home Affairs.
You may need the web form if:
- You hold a Titre de Voyage
- You have a Certificate of Identity
- Your Partner Visa application is not visible in ImmiAccount
- Your application ID starts with “IRIS”
- You changed your sex or gender details
Web form requests generally takes longer and can require around 14 days for processing.
Important Travel Reminder
Before travelling internationally, always double-check that:
- Your visa is linked to your current passport
- Your passport information is correct
- Your visa remains valid
- Your visa conditions are still active
Even small mistakes in passport information can sometimes create delays with airlines or immigration authorities.
