Planning overseas travel while an immigration matter is ongoing? Check your eligibility before booking. Changes to Bridging Visa B (BVB) arrangements take effect on 1 November 2026.
Who is affected?
The new restrictions concern valid Protection (Class XA) applications that have not been finally determined or withdrawn, and unfinished judicial-review proceedings concerning those applications, including appeals. Relevant pending ART protection reviews are included.
What changes?
The amendments introduce application-validity restrictions and corresponding BVB grant criteria. A separate pending non-protection visa application does not bypass the protection-matter exclusion.
What about earlier applications and existing BVBs?
The amendments apply to visa applications made on or after 1 November 2026. They do not apply to earlier BVB applications. They do not automatically cancel an already-granted BVB. Earlier lodgement does not guarantee approval, and existing holders must still check their individual travel facility and visa status.
Where is the official source?
Migration Amendment (2026 Measures No. 1) Regulations 2026 — F2026L01448, Schedule 1, Part 2, items 3–5 and Part 3, clause 16501(3). These amend Schedule 1 item 1302 and Schedule 2 subclass 020 of the Migration Regulations 1994.
What should I check before travelling?
- Your current visa grant notice and VEVO status.
- Your permitted travel period and any visa conditions.
- The type and current stage of each application or review.
- The date any BVB application was made.
Ask for advice based on your own documents before making non-refundable travel commitments. Do not withdraw a protection application simply to seek a travel visa without first obtaining advice about the consequences.
