South Australia’s 22 October 2026 skilled migration update explained simply: who can submit an onshore ROI, what offshore candidates should do, and which sectors are priorities.

Updated 22 October 2026 | Global Consult
South Australia has announced a targeted opening under its 2026–27 General Skilled Migration program. If you are considering SA state nomination, start by checking where you live and work, your current visa expiry and the requirements of the relevant nomination stream.
Who can submit an onshore ROI under this opening?
The announcement opens Registrations of Interest (ROIs) to eligible people who are living and working in South Australia and whose current visas expire by 31 January 2027. It should not be read as an unrestricted opening for everyone currently in Australia.
Important: 31 January 2027 is a visa-expiry condition in this announcement. It is not an announced deadline for submitting an ROI. You still need to meet the relevant occupation and stream criteria.
What should offshore candidates do?
Offshore candidates can continue to lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect. They do not need to submit an SA ROI for the process described in this update. Suitable offshore candidates may be invited directly from their SkillSelect EOI.
Which sectors are priorities?
The announcement identifies building and construction, defence, education, engineering, health and manufacturing. High-ranking candidates working in other sectors may also be considered. A priority-sector job alone does not establish eligibility or guarantee selection. All applicants need a current EOI in SkillSelect.
What is the difference between an EOI and an ROI?
| Term | Plain-language meaning |
|---|---|
| EOI | An Expression of Interest lodged in the Australian Government’s SkillSelect system. |
| ROI | A Registration of Interest used in South Australia’s onshore selection process where required. |
Neither should be treated as a visa grant. SA nomination and the Home Affairs visa decision are separate stages.
What should you check before taking the next step?
- Your exact occupation against the current SA Skilled Occupation List.
- The nomination stream that applies to your circumstances.
- The applicable state nomination and Home Affairs visa requirements.
- Whether your EOI and supporting information accurately reflect your circumstances.
- Your visa expiry and the time available to obtain individual advice.
Common questions
I live in another Australian state. Does this announcement cover me?
The targeted onshore opening refers to people living and working in SA. Do not assume it covers you simply because your visa expires before the stated date. Ask for an individual review before making decisions about relocation or applications.
My visa expires after 31 January 2027. Can I use this opening?
The stated visa-expiry condition would not match your circumstances. Check for later official updates and ask our migration team about other available options. This does not mean you have no migration pathway.
Will submitting an ROI or EOI guarantee an invitation?
No. Expressions of interest, selection for nomination and the grant of a visa are different steps. Requirements and available places can affect the outcome.
