What is the best course to get permanent residency (PR) in Australia in 2026? There is no single course that guarantees PR. A sensible study choice can prepare you for a skilled occupation, but a qualification alone does not secure a skills assessment, an invitation, an employer nomination or a visa. The right choice depends on your interests, existing qualifications, English level, age, work plans and the rules that apply when you graduate.

Start with the Department of Home Affairs skilled occupation list. It identifies occupations, the relevant lists and assessing authorities. Check the specific occupation and visa subclass: the Core Skills Occupation List for some employer-sponsored visas is not the same thing as eligibility for a points-tested subclass 189 visa.

Courses and careers worth investigating

The fields below can be strong starting points for a student who genuinely wants to work in the profession. They are examples to assess, not a ranking or a promise of a visa.

Study field Possible occupation Check before enrolling
Nursing Registered nurse Choose a program approved for nursing registration; check Nursing and Midwifery Board/Ahpra registration and ANMAC’s migration assessment requirements.
Teaching Early childhood, primary or secondary teacher Check that the qualification and supervised practice meet the relevant teacher occupation’s AITSL criteria and any state or territory registration requirements. A childcare certificate does not automatically qualify someone as an early childhood teacher.
Social work Social worker Check AASW recognition of the particular social work program and its migration assessment criteria; do not assume any community services qualification is equivalent.
Allied health For example, occupational therapist, physiotherapist or speech pathologist Check the profession’s approved program, registration where applicable, placement requirements and migration assessing authority.
Engineering For example, civil, electrical or mechanical engineer Check the exact engineering program’s accreditation and Engineers Australia’s assessment pathway for the occupation.
IT and data For example, software or ICT professional Match the course content and eventual job duties to the nominated occupation. ACS may require relevant post-qualification work experience or a Professional Year under its Post Australian Study pathway.
Skilled trades For example, electrician, plumber or carpenter Check the occupation, course level, licensing, supervised training and Trades Recognition Australia’s assessment route. Its Job Ready Program includes employment-based assessment.

These fields differ considerably in course length, tuition, practical placements, professional entry requirements and job opportunities. A popular occupation can also be competitive for invitations. Choose a career you could realistically qualify for and work in, even if migration settings change.

How study can connect to a visa pathway

  • Skilled Independent (subclass 189): A points-tested permanent visa for eligible occupations. An expression of interest is not an invitation, and meeting a minimum points threshold does not guarantee one.
  • Skilled Nominated (subclass 190): A permanent visa requiring state or territory nomination, as well as the visa criteria. Each jurisdiction sets its own nomination requirements.
  • Skilled Work Regional (subclass 491): A provisional regional visa with nomination or eligible family sponsorship requirements. It is not PR on grant; eligible holders may later seek the subclass 191 permanent visa if they meet its conditions.
  • Employer sponsorship: A suitable job and employer may open another route, including the permanent subclass 186 where all requirements are met. The subclass 482 Skills in Demand visa is temporary and does not itself guarantee PR.

For points-tested 189, 190 and 491 pathways, Home Affairs’ SkillSelect requires an expression of interest and an invitation to apply. Occupation eligibility, the assessing authority, English, age, points and nomination rules must be checked against the intended pathway. State nomination settings and invitation outcomes can change.

Five checks before you pay a course deposit

  1. Choose the occupation first. Identify its exact name and code, current visa lists and assessing authority on the Home Affairs occupation page.
  2. Confirm the actual course. For a student visa, verify the provider and course on the official CRICOS register. Separately check professional accreditation or registration with the relevant body; CRICOS listing by itself does not prove professional recognition.
  3. Map the full assessment route. Ask what placements, English test results, registration, licensing and employment evidence the assessing authority will require. An IT degree, for example, is only one part of an ACS assessment.
  4. Review your post-study options. The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) has different streams and strict study, age and other criteria. Do not assume a short course or every vocational qualification qualifies. A 485 is temporary, not a PR guarantee.
  5. Test the plan against your circumstances. Compare course costs, genuine career fit, locations, possible jobs, state nomination rules and alternative pathways. Get individual advice before changing a current course or visa strategy.

So which course is best for you?

If you want to practise as a nurse or teacher, an appropriately approved program can give you a clear professional qualification to assess. Social work, allied health and engineering can also have defined assessment routes. IT and trade pathways can work for suitable candidates, but practical experience, licensing or assessment stages may be decisive. The best course is the one that fits your career and can meet the exact occupation and visa requirements for your circumstances.
