What changes on 5 October 2026?
The Australian Government has specified this qualification for suspension and cancellation of its CRICOS registration. From 5 October 2026, providers cannot issue new CoEs, enrol new overseas students or start overseas students who have not already commenced the course. The Department of Education says the action addresses systemic integrity concerns. Department of Education guidance.
If you have already started
Overseas students who are enrolled and have commenced before 5 October can continue with their existing provider. ASQA explains that the provider’s registration for this course is suspended while those students finish or withdraw, then cancelled. Domestic delivery is unaffected. ASQA course cancellation update.
Ask your provider to confirm your actual course status in writing. Keep your timetable, attendance and assessment records alongside your enrolment documents.
If you have a CoE but have not started
The Department’s student fact sheet states that students who have not commenced before 5 October cannot start the course, and their GDML CoE will be cancelled on that date. Contact your provider promptly to discuss an alternative course or a refund of unspent tuition fees, depending on your circumstances.
If GDML is a later part of a course package, ask how the change affects that package and your visa conditions. A replacement course should be checked against relevant Australian Qualifications Framework requirements. Official student and provider fact sheets.
Questions to ask before making a decision
- Have I actually commenced this course, and what records confirm that?
- How will my current and future CoEs be affected?
- What written alternative-course or refund options can my provider offer?
- Does a proposed new course fit my study goals and visa conditions?
- Can I realistically meet the timetable, attendance and assessment requirements?
Our practical recommendation is to pause before agreeing to a rushed change. Get the full study plan, costs and obligations in writing, and seek advice about your own visa circumstances. A course offer or CoE should never be treated as a guarantee of a visa outcome.
Where to get help
Under the student fact sheet, where a provider default occurs, the provider must offer an alternative course placement or refund unspent tuition fees within 14 days. If those obligations are not met, the Tuition Protection Service may assist. The fact sheet also directs students to Home Affairs information about changes to their study situation.
