✅ Contributory Parent Visa Australia – A Complete Guide (2025 Update)
If you’re an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen looking to reunite with your parents in Australia, the Contributory Parent Visa is one of the most viable and faster options available. This visa offers a pathway for parents to live in Australia permanently, provided they meet specific eligibility criteria and contribute to the costs of their long-term health and welfare.
In this blog, we break down the types of Contributory Parent Visas, key requirements, processing times, costs, and how to apply. Let’s dive in!
🧾 What is a Contributory Parent Visa?
The Contributory Parent Visa is a permanent visa that allows the parents of settled Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible NZ citizens to live in Australia. These visas are called “contributory” because applicants pay a higher visa application charge to offset their potential health and aged care costs.
Unlike other parent visa categories, contributory visas have significantly shorter processing times, making them a preferred option despite the higher costs.
📌 Types of Contributory Parent Visas
There are two main types of Contributory Parent Visas under the Subclass 143 and 173 streams (offshore), and their onshore counterparts are Subclass 864 and 884.
1. Contributory Parent (Temporary) Visa – Subclass 173
- Stay Duration: 2 years (temporary)
- Purpose: A temporary option for parents who want to enter Australia and then transition to permanent residency via Subclass 143.
- Cost: Lower initial cost than 143, with additional payment upon applying for Subclass 143.
Key Benefits:
- Allows parents to live, work, and study in Australia for two years.
- Can later apply for permanent Subclass 143 without repeating the balance-of-family test.
2. Contributory Parent (Permanent) Visa – Subclass 143
- Stay Duration: Permanent
- Purpose: Direct permanent residency for parents living outside Australia.
- Cost: Approx. AUD 47,825 per applicant (as of 2025).
Key Benefits:
- Access to Medicare
- Apply for Australian citizenship (if eligible)
- Travel to and from Australia for 5 years
3. Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) Visa – Subclass 884
- Stay Duration: 2 years (onshore)
- Eligibility: Applicant must be in Australia and eligible for aged pension in Australia.
- Pathway: Transition to Subclass 864 permanent visa.
4. Contributory Aged Parent (Permanent) Visa – Subclass 864
- Stay Duration: Permanent
- Eligibility: Onshore aged parents who pass the balance-of-family test.
- Cost: Similar to Subclass 143 but processed while remaining in Australia.
